“Around the world” podcast
Episode 1- Jessamyn Neuhaus, SUNY Plattsburgh, USA
Today we are making a new stop on our journey around the world and this time we also change the medium: after 4 written pieces, it’s about time we practice what we preach, i.e. diversity in formats, and introduce you to the very first “Educationalist” podcast.
For this very special occasion I have an equally special guest, Jessamyn Neuhaus. Jessamyn is a professor of U.S. history and popular culture at SUNY Plattsburgh and the 2020–21 Interim Director of Plattsburgh’s Center for Teaching Excellence. She is the recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and author of Geeky Pedagogy: A Guide for Intellectuals, Introverts, and Nerds Who Want to be Effective Teachers (West Virginia University Press). You probably know her from Twitter as @GeekyPedagogy and you can find out more about her work on her website.
I this rather long chat (yes, I absolutely love talking to like-minded and inspiring people!) we talk about Jessamyn’s approach to faculty development and her personal experience before and during Covid-19. She sees herself as a connector and curator and places great emphasis on human touch and empathy as central aspects of educational development. She also provides some great tips for those of us (many, I think) who don’t have a lot of resources for faculty development but are really passionate about supporting faculty.
If you have some time this summer (yes, you can take us to the beach :)) I really invite you to listen to our talk. I promise you will feel reinvigorated and ready to start the new academic year!
